Admission Criteria for International Students

For international students who have studied or are studying at a United States high school or a United States system school, refer to our first-year admission criteria for more details on how the University of Georgia evaluates applications. In addition, if English is not your first language, you must show proof of English proficiency.

If English is not your first language, then you must provide proof of English proficiency. There are four ways to do this:
  1. Submit an official SAT-I verbal score of 430 or higher. All first-year applicants must submit SAT-I scores.
  2. Submit a TOEFL score of at least 213 on the computer-based TOEFL. Note: Transfer students applying to the Terry College of Business need a score of 250 or higher. Remember that all score reports must be official. TOEFL scores must be less than two years old if you have not been studying at a U.S. institution since taking the exam.
  3. Take the equivalent of English 1101 and 1102 (first-year composition) at an accredited U.S. institution and earn a minimum 2.5 combined GPA for the two courses. This must be reflected on an official transcript.
  4. Submit proof of an earned bachelor’s degree at an accredited U.S. institution.

For international students who are transferring from a United States college or university, refer to the transfer student information page for more details on how the University of Georgia evaluates transfer credentials. In addition, if English is not your first language, you must show proof of English proficiency.

For international students who have studied or are studying at a university or institution in a country outside of the United States, the University of Georgia will evaluate your credentials based on a wide range of factors. Admission to UGA might depend on the country in which you are studying, the system of education, the credentials of the university or institution and the exams offered by the country or university. If you have completed post-secondary coursework at a non-U.S. institution, we must receive official transcripts from all institutions attended and an official outsourced credit evaluation. We will use the credit evaluation to help us determine how many credits you have earned as well as how your courses transfer into the U.S. educational system. We require that you use one of six evaluation services: Josef Silny, Inc., World Education Services, Inc., Education Credential Evaluators, Inc., International Education Research Foundation, Inc., American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and Lisano International. We also request that you submit results from any examinations such as the GCSEs, CXCs, HSSC or African Certificates of Secondary Education, as well as proof of your English proficiency. We are not able to determine an admission decision until we have reviewed your completed admission file.

*Please note: It may take 2-6 weeks to obtain a credit evaluation. In addition, be sure to request a “course-by-course” evaluation.
