*Note: If a deadline date falls on a Sunday or a federal holiday, the postmark deadline will be extended to the first business day following the published deadline. |
At the University of Georgia, applicant files are classified as “international” if they meet any of the criteria listed below. Supplemental application materials are needed for each of the following criteria, so review this Web site carefully to see what is needed in your specific case.
- You are not a U.S. citizen and are currently in the United States on an F-1 (student) visa.
- You will require an F-1 visa to enter and study in the United States.
- You are currently in the United States on some other class of visa. Please submit a copy of the visa from your passport.
Permanent Legal Residency
- If you are a Permanent Legal Resident of the United States, please submit a copy of the front and back of your card for inspection.
- If you are in the process of obtaining permanent legal residency, please submit all documentation related to this process. This would include, but not be limited to, an Employment Authorization Document, the form I-485, or your I-94 departure record.
- If you hold refugee or asylum status, please forward all documentation related to this status.
Deadlines and Accuracy Are Crucial
- Apply on time. First, be sure that you apply and complete your file by the deadline. All required materials must be submitted by the deadline, or we will not make an admissions decision. UGA is not able to offer provisional admission.
- Indicate your admissions category. Be sure to check the correct category (first-year, transfer, second-degree, post-baccalaureate, summer transient, etc.). Note that second-degree and post-baccalaureate students must meet transfer requirements.
- Fill out the application carefully and completely. Contact the Admissions Office if you have any questions or difficulties while applying. We also ask that you fill out the "Supplemental Form (page 4 of the 2007-08 Certificate of Finances) if you have completed part of your high school education outside the United States. Students who have studied only in the United States do not need to fill out the Supplemental Form.
All international files require more documentation than traditional files, but how much more information depends on your situation. We suggest that you review the following categories to see what additional materials are needed in order for us to review your file. Remember: these materials must be submitted by the stated deadlines in order to have a complete file that is ready for review.
Proof of English Proficiency
If English is not your first language, then you must provide proof of English proficiency. There are five ways to do this:
- Submit an official SAT-I verbal score of 430 or higher. All first-year applicants must submit SAT-I scores.
- Submit an official TOEFL score of at least 80 on the Internet-based exam or 213 on the computer-based version. Remember that all score reports must be official. TOEFL scores must be less than two years old if you have not been studying at a U.S. institution since taking the exam. Information regarding the test dates and centers can be found at www.ets.org.
- Submit an official IELTS score of 7.0 or higher. All score reports must be official. Note: Transfer students applying to the Terry College of Business should contact the College about their score requirements as they are higher. Official test dates and centers can be found at www.ielts.org.
- Take the equivalent of English 1101 and 1102 (first-year composition) at an accredited U.S. institution and earn a minimum 2.5 combined GPA for the two courses. This must be reflected on an official transcript.
- Submit proof of a bachelor’s degree earned at an accredited U.S. institution.
Required School Records and Transcripts
We must have official transcripts, school records or examination results before we can evaluate your file.
For first-year applicants: We require official records for all secondary school coursework. If you have taken examinations such as the GCSEs, CXCs, HSSC or African Certificates of Secondary Education, please submit official score reports. If you need to send a photocopy, have an appropriate school official certify that it is an official copy with a stamp and signature. If your records are not in English, you must include a certified translation.
For transfers: If you have completed post-secondary coursework at a non-U.S. institution, we must receive official transcripts and an official “course-by-course” credit evaluation. We will use the credit evaluation to help determine how many credits you have earned, as well as how your courses should transfer into the U.S. educational system. We require that you use one of six evaluation services: Josef Silny, Inc., World Education Services, Inc., Education Credential Evaluators, Inc., International Education Research Foundation, Inc., American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and Lisano International.
*Please note: It may take 2-6 weeks to obtain a credit evaluation.
Immigration and Student Visas
If you require an F-1 (student) visa, indicate that you are an “alien, non-immigrant” and also check that you require an I-20. Please note that you must be admitted and complete a certificate of finances before we can issue an I-20. You may print the Certificate of Finances Form from the Admissions Web site. F-1 students must be degree seeking candidates.
In order to process your I-20, we must receive:
- Certificate of Finances form. Be sure to sign it on the bottom line and indicate how many semesters per academic year you intend to study.
- If the bank account represented in your Certificate of Finances form is NOT in your name, we must have the signature of your financial sponsor (even if the sponsor is your parent). If the sponsor cannot sign the form, please ask him or her to write a letter stating that s/he will support your studies. The letter must bear an original signature. (No faxes will be accepted.)
- A bank official must verify that adequate funds are available for study at the University of Georgia. The bank official can do this in one of three ways: by stating the specific balance available in a given account and verifying this information with his/her signature; by writing a letter on bank stationery in which s/he acknowledges the cost of attending UGA and verifies that at least that amount is available; or, by certifying an official bank statement.
*Please note: We cannot accept faxes or unofficial photocopies of financial letters or bank statements. All financial information must be dated less than one year prior to the first day of classes of the term you intend to begin study.
Note: If you are currently a student at another institution in the United
States and already have an F-1 visa, you will need a new I-20 issued by the
University of Georgia. Therefore, you must submit a Certificate of Finances
Form to our office. If you hold a type of visa other than J or F, you must
submit a photocopy of the visa and a copy of your I-94 card. If you are a
permanent resident (a “green card” holder), a photocopy of your
card is one of the documents required in order to be considered for Georgia
in-state tuition. |
