Summer First-Year Orientation

Summer 2007 – First-Year Orientation

Students who have committed to attend the “Freshman College Summer Experience” program in July do not need to reserve an Orientation session. All “Freshman College” participants will attend a special two-day Orientation on July 2-3.

Please read the information below before proceeding to the Orientation reservation process.

First-Year Orientation - Purpose

You are about to embark on one of the greatest adventures of your life – college! You will begin this adventure at Orientation, a program designed to prepare you for a successful beginning to your UGA experience. This program will give you a head start in learning how to take full advantage of the many educational, social, and cultural opportunities awaiting you over the next four years.

Orientation for new students beginning their enrollment in the summer term will take place on Monday, June 4. Orientation is necessary for you to meet with your assigned academic advisor and register for your first semester classes. Also, you will meet future classmates, purchase your UGACard student ID, hear from faculty and staff about opportunities and expectations, tour the campus, and discuss additional questions or concerns with specially trained student Orientation Leaders.

On the day of Orientation you will attend the academic area meeting in the school or college to which you were accepted. At or prior to the academic area meeting you will receive an advisement appointment time. Many students will subsequently meet with their academic advisor on Tuesday, June 5. Class registration for summer semester will take place only after meeting with an advisor. Classes begin on Thursday, June 7.

Cost

The cost for attending Orientation for summer semester is $40. The $40 Orientation fee is non-refundable. This fee covers the expense of lunch in the dining hall, required testing, campus transportation, printed Orientation materials, and administrative costs. You can pay online by credit card or webCheck when you reserve your session. Assignment to an Orientation session will only be made after payment has been received.

Testing

To assure that new students are placed in the correct level of certain courses, the University requires that most incoming first-year students take placement tests in English and mathematics at Orientation. Some students may be required to take a reading comprehension test. Students with advanced credit through College Board A.P. exams, International Baccalaureate scores, SAT II scores, or college joint enrollment credit may be exempt from placement tests. More information on testing.

Parents

Parents are invited to attend Orientation with their student.

Warning: If you are paying by credit card or e-check, be careful not to hit the enter key while filling out forms and not to double-click on the "Submit" or "Continue" buttons, or your account may be charged more than once.

The UGA Orientation reservation system is only available from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day.
